Strong, smart female sleuths who can wield a firearm when necessary have begun to get their due in the mystery genre in the last few decades, with the result that they're no longer really uncommon. Suzanne Arruda's Jade del Cameron series, though, is still a bit unique. It's set in Africa in the years immediately after World War I, an inherently interesting locale that hasn't been done to death in American fiction. Jade's not a professional detective; she's a former (wounded and decorated) ambulance driver in the late war, now hired to write articles on Africa for a magazine, but mysteries and mayhem have a way of finding her. She can handle that, though; she grew up on a ranch in the predator-infested New Mexico mountains, where she learned to hunt and shoot a rifle with lethal accuracy; she's got good reflexes and mostly steel nerves, and not much intimidates her. Add to that the fact that she's a caring, intelligent, strong-willed young lady with a down-to-earth attitude, and you've got a heroine most fans will readily respect and admire. My wife and I recently finished reading the first book, Mark of the Lion (first published in, I believe, 2006) and loved it; this is definitely a series we're going to be reading more of!
