YouTube, MySpace and their cousins have made it all the easier for action heroine fans to get their entertainment fix. Each month, we pick one clip to feature: this is the archives of the previous nominees.

We've covered a couple of examples of Mexitrash before, in La Guerrera Vengadora 2, El Jardinero 2 and Perra Maldita: here is a vintage example. This clip comes from a 1968 film called Con Licencia Para Matar, which translates as "With a License To Kill" - I hear the Broccolis preparing a law-suit as we speak. It stars Emily Cranz, Maura Monti and Barbara Angely as three women who have 'normal' lives by day, but fight crime and international terrorists by night. It proved popular enough to merit a sequel, Muņecas peligrosas. Now, where can we find the whole thing...

November 2008

The nice people over at Bitch Slap were kind enough to send us a copy of the new trailer for their film, which explains a bit more about the plot, and has whetted my appetite to see this one even more. The release date for this one is now looking to be at some point next year, though there is as yet no exact date. Which is probably the only thing about the film that is not firm. :-) Enjoy!

So, I was just updating the links page, removing some of the inevitable deadwood that results with the passage of time, and I realized a bit of a heinous omission: CSaGaG.com was not listed. That's an acronym for Cheap Site about Girls and Guns, which is exactly what it says: a copious collection of pics, videos and other resources on the topic. Having rectified it's non-appearance on the links page, by way of an apology and some promotion for them [in their alias site of gungirls.eu], here's their promo reel. Though I must confess I now have an overwhelming urge to go and watch Die Hard... :-)

September 2008

Stumbling around the tubes of the Interwebs, we found the following video, in which Michael Hurst deconstructs the upcoming Bitch Slap, a flick that looks like a most amusing homage to the B-exploitation films we love, with stunt co-ordinator Zoe (Grindhouse) Bell. How can any movie go wrong with Lucy Lawless as a mother superior? For more info, check out the official website. We will, needless to say, be following this one with interest.

Ms. 45 is one of the quintessential girls-with-guns films of all time, taking the concept and running with in a way that beautifully combines the fascination with the fear. Here's the original trailer for Abel Ferrara's grindhouse classic - you can read our article on the movie here.

Venetian Princess is the owner of one of the most renowned channels on YouTube, with her videos skewering various aspects of pop culture, and showcasing impressive levels of production for something she basically films in her living-room! Here is her take on Lara Croft: it's rather more entertaining than The Cradle of Life, for my money...

Readers will know how Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS is one of our guiltiest pleasures - and so, Werewolf Women Of The S.S. was about our favorite part of Grindhouse. While we wait for that to get made, Wild Eye Releasing didn't, and have brought us Blitzkrieg: Escape from Stalag 69, which had it's world premiere on May 24th in New York. Here's the trailer. At the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious [c'mon - look at the lobby card...], it's Not Safe For Work. And we wouldn't have it any other way!

Manami Toyota is perhaps the best women wrestler of all time. The video below will give some a small insight into why, though you really need to see some of her fights in full to appreciate her ferocious athleticism. [YouTube is your friend: check out the September 1995 bout between her and Akira Hokuto - who's almost her equal]

February 2008

Fans of the Resident Evil games may be less than enamored of their tranlation to the big-screen, but the series has been one of the most popular girls-with-guns franchises of the past decade. It has spawned two sequels, which is a damn sight more than most video-game films [or, indeed, action heroines] managed. Been a while since I watched the original, but if you have, you'll likely get a kick out of this month's Youtube offering, which condenses the entire movie into less than three minutes.

January 2008

This is the trailer for Chocolate, from Prachya Pinkaew, director of Ong-bak and The Protector, which made a super-star of Tony Jaa. It's about an autistic girl who picks up martial-arts skills from TV and their next-door neighbours, a muay thai academy. She uses those skills to collect debts on behalf of her ill mother, which incurs the wrath of both local and Japanese gangs. As with Pinkaew's earlier films, there is no wire-work or CGI - it's all raw, athletic ability, and based on this trailer alone (or even the painful out-takes), it could be the best action heroine film of 2008. The Thai release is February 8.
